I’m not gonna lie, if you’re trying to land a job in tech, your LinkedIn profile matters. Think of it like your online resume and portfolio all in one.
Here’s how to make your LinkedIn profile pop, even if you don’t have tech experience yet.
1. Profile Picture: Keep it Clear & Friendly
No need for professional headshots, just a clear, recent photo where you look approachable. You don’t have to dress up, just look how you would at work.
2. Background Banner:
Use that banner space at the top to say something about you. This could be a simple design with your field of interest written in text. Or maybe even a quote.
3. Headline:
Instead of just “Customer Service Rep,” try something like:
“Customer Service Pro | Learning SQL & Data Analytics”
It gives people an idea of where you are and where you’re headed.
4. About Section = Your Story
Don’t just copy-paste your resume here. Talk about why you’re interested in tech, what you’ve been learning, and what kind of role you’re working toward.
Example:
“I’m a former medical assistant learning data analytics with the goal of becoming a healthcare application analyst. I’ve worked closely with clinical systems and I’m now building up my tech skills through self-paced learning.”
5. Skills Section: Show What You’re Learning
List both your transferable skills (communication, problem-solving, etc.) and any tools or tech you’re picking up (Excel, SQL, Tableau, etc.).
6. Experience: Reframe What You’ve Done
Worked as a dialysis tech or in customer service? Talk about how you worked with data, systems, or solved workflow problems. Example:
“Collaborated with clinical teams to manage patient data using [insert system]. Flagged and reported issues that affected daily workflows.”
7. Certs & Courses: Start Adding Them
Start learning the basics through free or affordable platforms and add those certificates to your profile:
8. Build Your Network
Connect with people who work in roles you’re aiming for. Message them (respectfully) and ask about their journey. The more you connect, the more LinkedIn shows your profile to more of the right people.
